Kitchen Cabinets; How To Set The Tone For Your Entire Home

A lot of our lives revolve around food – preparing it, eating it and cleaning up afterwards. So naturally, the kitchen becomes the center of most homes. For this reason, sow you set up your kitchen can influence the tone of the rest of the house. If you want your home to have any sort of vibe at all, it’s going to start in the kitchen.
If these walls could speak… the stories they could tell.  Given the budget and time, any person can communicate quite well the type of person they are by simply allowing people to see their kitchens.  Magazines are filled with images that say a thousand words about the personality of their designers and you know what’s right when you see it. For some, nothing else than stainless steel, granite and glass will do. Little else is desired in the way of frills or accessories, just high quality fixtures that dazzle the eyes. For others, warmth and life seem to exude from every corner, rich colors of wood, details of pulls and handles, and floral and woodsy accents draw you into it’s life.
But for many, trying to communicate who they are through decor and design is a foreign language.  That’s not something to shy away from, however. There are ways to find out what is going to work for you and your home. It’s quite an adventure to be savored, as well. Take a whole day and walk around kitchen stores, taking note of what style makes you feel the best. Is sleek and modern your cup of tea? Does the sight of steel and stone warm your heart? Or do you not feel comfortable without a soft, woodsy feel to your home, with plenty of warm light glowing from all directions?
Whichever you choose, the cabinets will influence the whole of your home. Cabinets also take up the majority of physical space in your kitchen, so you will want to choose them carefully when making a decision to remodel. Here are some things to consider.
1. Cost
Whenever tackling a remodeling project, it is important to set your budget. When it comes to kitchen remodels, cabinets account for 40 to 50% of the cost. You will need to figure out what kind of budget you have to determine which options will be available to you.
2. Style
Are you planning to move soon and want to update your kitchen before putting your current home on the market? Or are you building your dream kitchen? These factors can influence the style you choose to install. Will you be replacing the entire cabinet or merely updating your current ones? Do you prefer hardwood, or would a less expensive wood veneer or laminate suit you? Would you like your cabinets to have a splash of color? Stock cabinets are an inexpensive option that come in basic shapes and sizes but offer less options where style is concerned. If you want more style options, then semi-custom or custom cabinets might be the route to go. Whatever style you opt for, make sure it is something that will blend well with your home’s architecture. The choice of knobs and handles should also match the style you choose.
Knotty alder cabinetry give a warm glow to a room.
3. Quality
Whatever you choose, you will want to make sure that you purchase good quality cabinets. They should be solidly built, with strong door and drawer fronts, reinforced corners, closed backs and a smooth finish. Choosing wholesale cabinets can help you to find good quality at a reasonable price. A good place to check for wholesale cabinets that offer beautiful, quality craftsmanship at reasonable prices would be Knotty Alder.
4. Storage Needs
Another big factor when choosing cabinets is storage. How much storage space do you need? What kind of storage? Careful planning ahead of time can make it easier to choose your cabinets once you get to the store. Today’s cabinets offer a lot of storage options, including such things as pull out shelves and baskets, lazy susans, and appliance garages.
5. Work Space
No matter what you want to do with your kitchen, you can only do as much as your space will allow. If you have a small or tight space to work with, you may have to be more creative to maximize the organization of your kitchen. If you have limited space, a tall narrow pantry cabinet can help give you some added storage for essentials like your pots and pans. In smaller spaces, finding ways to keep everything organized becomes even more critical as clutter just makes limited space more crowded.
Before you remodel your kitchen, these factors need to be considered. If you plan out everything ahead of time, you can make sure your remodel is done correctly the first time. Then you will be on your way to enjoying your space and the all the memory-making meals to come.

Dealing with Common Kitchen Sink Drain Problems

Given how often you use your kitchen sink and how it is constantly exposed to different types of wastes, you shouldn’t be surprised if you experience having problems with the drain. Even if you are careful in cleaning up and trying to clear the sink of any scraps that could clog the drain, you can’t really be sure that it won’t have any problems.
A lot of kitchen sink drain problems are fairly easy to repair. If it’s a problem found in the parts just below the bowl, you have a lot of options in trying to dismantle, fix, and put it back together. You can also clean up these parts on your own easily. However, if the problem originates further down, it is best to hire a professional to locate and fix the issue. Although drain problems can be a headache, always remember that they can be fixed either by you or by a professional.
Slow-Draining Kitchen Sink
It shouldn’t take more than half a minute for your sink bowl to clear up and for the wastewater to go down the drain. If you notice that it takes a while for your sink to drain, there must be something wrong with some of the parts under the sink. If you don’t attend to this immediately, it can cause a major blockage in your sink, and water might not be able to move down at all. It is easy to troubleshoot this problem, and most of the time, you can repair on your own.
First, check the trap that’s right under the sink. Solid wastes lodged in the trap is the usual culprit for slow draining kitchen sinks. You can simply remove the trap and take out the clog yourself. If it isn’t located in the trap, it could be somewhere else down the drain. You could try pouring a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to try and clear the clog. If this still doesn’t work, you may have to call a plumbers to check where the problem lies in your system.
 Gurgling Kitchen Sink Drains
Hearing a weird gurgling sound when you are using your kitchen sink is normal when it is draining. This means the water that has passed through the trap is pushed out by water coming from the vents, and when the water passes through the air vents, a vacuum is replaced by the air coming in and continues to carry the water to the main drain system. On the sink, air can also enter the drain as the water slowly goes down, causing the gurgling sound. This is normal and signifies that your drain and vent systems are working fine.
However, if your sink starts gurgling even when you don’t use it, you might want to check the other fixtures of your home. If you notice that your kitchen drain starts gurgling when you flush a toilet or when a sink drains in other rooms of your house, there is probably a problem down the line of your home’s drain system. You can try and clear the pipes on your own, but if it still doesn’t work, the problem could be in your vents system.
The vents outside of your home can be blocked, preventing air from going into the pipes and allowing wastewater to move out into the sewage system. For this, you might want to check the roof of your home to see if any solid objectis blocking the vents. Use a high-pressure hose to clean it up and clear the vents. Make sure these sediments are removed so that air can freely enter the system and let water through the pipes easily.

10 Golden Tips to Make Your Kitchen Bigger

There is at least a single room in the house which is too cranky and problematic to decorate. This is the kitchen. A dream kitchen is anything but tiny, although this is a reality for many. The room looks like a cramped up triangle, with scanty counter space and precious little room for storing appliances. Even if you are not prepared to haul that wall, try the next best thing: you can create an impression of a larger space with the help of some strategic decorating tricks. Recessed lighting, light shades and the choice of light colors – here are 10 golden tips to make your kitchen bigger:

1. Paint the Kitchen White: If it is a small kitchen, white is your best friend. It not only reflects light, enhancing the sense of space, but also makes the wall appear receding. With the white coloring everything from the countertops to the cabinetry, ceiling and walls, an appearance of seamless space is created without borders or edges to prevent the eye. You may use various shades of white in combination with complementing textures to prevent the white room from appearing sterile. Crown molding and recessed panel cabinets help create delicate shadows, thus generating the viewers’ interest.

2. Low-Contrast Color Combination: The color scheme to be used for giving the notion of space to your kitchen is one with a reduced contrast. With nominal distinction among the countertops, walls, woodwork and cabinetry, the eyes glide over surfaces in search of a place to rest. The movement gives the appearance of larger space. Coloring the backsplash, flooring and cabinets in soft tones of gray green prevents your view from making sudden transitions from light to dark, hence creating an extensive and calm effect.

3. Create your Cabinet Doors in Glass: You can trick the brain into thinking that the available space is larger. One of the ways of doing that is by eliminating a few cabinet doors or replacing their solid fronts with glass. It draws the eye beyond the cabinet frames into cabinet depths to make the walls appear recessed. The trick works even more when the cabinets are neatly arranged and color coordinated. If there is clutter, the room appears crowded.

4. Use of Pictures: Restrict the total number of small appliances and clutter on your wall hangings and countertops. If you must use pictures, use a large single print rather than numerous smaller ones.

5. Cabinet Soffits: If there are no soffits over the cabinets, the kitchen appears larger, but you must beware of stuffing the cabinet tops with embellishments and accessories.

6. Slim Furnishings: If the size of the kitchen is small, it requires small-scale fixtures. Lightweight bar stools and ergonomic work islands do not distract the eye.

7. Reorganize Storage: It is a great idea to restructure countertops as storage spaces. Use a corner appliance garage or use the cabinet to conceal toasters and coffeemakers.

8. Expand Floor Space: Patterned floor and wall coverings might impede space, but structures like oversized diamonds painted on the floor can produce the illusion of space. The eye travels an elongated path, making the room appear wider than what it actually is. Low contrasts also enhance the appearance of space.

9. Widened Stripes: Horizontal stripes in light and medium stretch the floor space. Vinyl and wooden flooring can also be used.

10. Divert the View Upwards: If the eye gets a chance to view up and down, the apparent height is increased. This lifts the attention off the boxed room. Include objects which blend well with the background, rather than standing out.

Modular Kitchen construction

While researching on Modular kitchens recently, I came across this bit of information from a mail archive. Saving it for future reference.

We completed our interiors a couple of months ago, I thought I would share my experiences with the group:

1) I was told by a Plywood manufacturer (family friend) to never let anybody but you buy materials for your interiors. Apparently the interior contractor makes most money on the material (buying low-cost, poor quality materials) and worse you end up with lousy wood after you paid a whole lot per sqft of interiors. Although I was very apprehensive about buying wood and hardware(nails and hinges, not computers and printers) I found that if you get some help with what and where to buy, it is really quite simple – hence this long email.

2) Types of wood for interiors. Most people these days do not use real wood (teak, rosewood etc) for their interiors, instead use manufactured woods like plywood, blockboard or MDF(medium density fiber). Plywood is the most durable since it is many thin layers of manufactured wood glued one on top of the other and is also more expensive than the other two. Block board is pieces of real wood bonded together between 2 thin slices of plywood. MDF – the material used by most modular kitchens is not very strong since MDF is made of powered wood and tends to chip and powder away (If you try to disassemble an IKEA piece you might notice powdering near the ***), but MDF gives a very smooth outer surface(esp. If you want to paint the outside). You are much better off using plywood over MDF given inexpensive labour in India.

3) Surfaces: To make your ply, blockboard or MDF look pretty outside you will choose an outer finish such as a wood veneer, laminate, or paint. Wood veneer is a small (<0.5mm)>

4) Material brands and where to buy: For plywood I found that Hunsur Plywood(Hunsply) is the best plywood you can get, it is about twice as expensive as most other brands. Contact Hyder 09845018996 of Ahmedally and Co, on Mysore Road, Bangalore (beside the Mysore road flyover) from Hunsur Plywood. I also bought my veneers and laminates from Ahmedally and company. You will need a load of nails, *** and fevicol (adhesive) all this is easily bought at any hardware store. The next big ticket item are the hinges, drawer channels, wardrobe door handles – One of the best stores in town(Bangalore) is Paramanand on commercial street, that displays a huge variety as well has model kitchens etc upstairs where you can see many of these items in action. Prob. Paramanand is not the cheapest but I found it very convenient to pick out and buy all the interior hardware in one place. You can also get your entire kitchen drawers, channels and other funky modular-kitchen gizmos at Parmanand.

5) Interior Designer, Contractor v/s Carpenter: We had an interior designer who we thought would design all our interiors, find a contractor to implement her designs and oversee the work to completion. Firstly our interior designer did not work out, work was too sloppy (maybe I am too anal, when it comes to design) and their project management skills left much to be desired. Since my wood industry friend told me the *trade secrets* of getting the interior done, I boldly although apprehensively ventured forth to take matters into my own hands. I did not go with a contractor since I was told to buy my own materials and there are few contractors who will take up only a labour contract without buying materials(which is the sweet spot). My plywood supplier found me a really good Rajasthani carpenter Nathuram(0984540422 9 – speak in hindi) - who turned out to be a god-sent. He brought in a crew of about 5 carpenters with circular saws (and other machines you see at HomeDepot) and worked at a blistering pace (I guess it is easy to be amazed after the pace of villa construction) . These Rajasthanis guys have a great attitude, fantastic talent and they work through Saturdays and Sundays (only take a break for vishwakarma day once a month). I was very happy to see their quality and professionalism (my MS project schedules were adhered to). In summary, I found it extremely rewarding to work with a good carpenter directly having bought the interior materials myself, Although it takes some effort, you will end up with the best quality interiors at about half the cost of a contractor led effort. Perhaps not everybody will want to do this, but I thought this would be useful for people embarking on the 'Villa Interiors' phase.

So what is a modular kitchen and some best practices

I recently came across a customer who was told by his "designer" (more carpenter) that the kitchen he has made for the customer is Modular because ... "see it has these steel baskets and I will also put in a magic corner". Ha, haa I thought, this needs some explanation, why don't I use this topic as my first post in the blog. So here goes....aaaum ganeshaya namah...

With so many scrupulous and un-scrupulous designers, carpenters, interior-walas selling what they call "modular kitchens" these days it is good as a customer to know what exactly is a "Modular Kitchen".

So here it is....

1. As the name suggests a "Modular" Kitchen consists of modules that are assembled together. Each module consisting of the Carcass (box) and the shutter is independent and can be taken in and out of the full unit separately. This also helps in repair work when the kitchen ages as for example, you can completely replace the wet unit (unit under the washbasin) if it spoils after some years of use without disrupting the rest of the kitchen.

2.  The Carcass in a Modular kitchen rests on 3-4 inch legs, typically 4 legs under each module. It does not rest on a wooden plank. The legs are hidden behind a PVC (not wood) skirting. The legs & the PVC skirting help because (a) As mentioned in point 1 earlier the unit/ module can be independently moved in & out and (2) the wood does not touch the ground, hence no chances of any damage caused by water, mop etc.

3. Height is usually more than the normal kitchen. Most designers (Carpenters) would keep the height as 32 inches and this is usually what the builder also gives. However typical Modular Kitchens will have a height around 36 inches. It is good to keep this height because (1) We Indian women are nowadays taller than in the past :-) and therefore it is more convenient to work on a higher slab and (2) If you want to fit a dishwasher under the slab it will not fit in 32 inches and (3) A higher height gives you more storage space underneath.

4. While steel baskets and accessories in the drawers etc. are good, they nowadays cost the same as soft closing drawers & by that I mean the same price as Hettich Innotech drawers (http://www.hettich.com/uk/carpenter/1109.php) which are considered as among the best drawer systems in the world. The choice is however left to the individual.

I guess that's it. I am sure this will give one enough gyan to "sound" intelligent and knowledgeable to your designer/ carpenter so that he does not take you for a ride.
